If you’re like many immigrants trying to make sense of the current immigration landscape—especially with the Trump administration returning—this is a critical time to stay informed. I’m attorney Lee Marvin, and I’ve been practicing law for over 20 years, with more than a decade specializing in immigration law. Although my main office is in Grand Rapids, Michigan, I assist clients from all over the U.S. and globally.
The Big Question: Citizenship or Green Card?
One of the most common questions I get is: “Should I just keep my green card, or should I apply for U.S. citizenship?” Some clients have even been told—incorrectly—that if they don’t apply for citizenship soon, their green card could be canceled. That’s not true, but the concern is understandable.
Legally Speaking: Both Are Valid—But One Offers More Protection
While having a green card is legally sound, U.S. citizenship provides more security. With a green card, you’re subject to changes in processing times, executive orders, and political winds. Despite the title “permanent resident,” your status can still be challenged under certain circumstances. Citizenship, however, is a much stronger status. Once naturalized, your rights are much more secure unless there’s proven fraud in your application—a completely different issue.
What About the Trump Administration?
With Trump returning to office, many are asking what this means for their immigration status. Here’s my honest advice: If you’re eligible for naturalization, don’t wait—apply. This offers the highest level of protection no matter who’s in office.
But don’t rush into a decision out of fear. If you’re a legal permanent resident and acquired your green card lawfully, you’re protected regardless of who is president. Still, I always encourage my clients to aim for true permanence—and that means naturalization.
Green Card Renewal or Citizenship?
If your green card is about to expire, apply for a renewal immediately. But if you’re eligible for naturalization, apply for both. This dual approach ensures protection for you and your family.
